The Bueren mountain is a staircase of 374 steps with a slope of 30% connecting the citadel to the center of the town of Lège.
It was erected between 1875 and 1880 to allow the citadel garrison to quickly reach the center of Liège but also to prevent soldiers from frequenting the unsavory streets of the city.
It bears the name Bueren in homage to the leader of the Franchimontois, Vincent Bueren, who fought Charles the Bold in the 15th century. The name used by some Liège residents, Lès sî cin grés - the 600 steps, refers to the 600 Franchimontois and not to the number of steps.
