Bio

grietgriet was born near the North Sea and still lives on the Belgian coast. The need to express herself is has always been present, in words and in colour. Apart from a few short courses, she is mainly a auto-didact artist. The urge to share her work with others only started a few years ago.

On canvas she mainly works with texturizing paste and acrylic paint. Her drawings are cut out from the sketchbook and processed into collages. While the collages tell concrete stories, the portraits on canvas reflect emotions rather than a story.

Artist statement

For me, connection is the essence of what I create. By displaying emotions that are familiar to all humans, I show what connects everyone.

In the universal silence I look for a melancholy, an emotional depth that is real. The moment a tear, a scream or a smile disappears, is the moment I try to capture it on canvas.

I love powerful simplicity. I like the texture on the canvas, which provides extra challenges. My portraits do not represent existing persons. The human faces are my means of expressing human emotions.
